Maintenance Time
Our furnace is now ramping down in temperature for annual summer maintenance.
We bring her down in temperature slowly and when the time comes back up again very slowly to ensure all the ceramics in there do not suffer a thermal shock. Thermal chock and a cracked crucible is a glassmakers nightmare and we do all we can to avoid the situation.
We plan to fire her back up again early September and begin blowing glass over the winter months... shorts all year round in here.
In the mean time, the studio is open and welcoming visitors and we will be round and about working with the glass in other ways. When you visit you may also meet Peter in the gallery who is helping us out.
Open as usual Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm
Sunday afternoons 2-4pm
The Apple Blossom Bowl
The extended cold snap and late spring held back the growth of our apple trees this year. But two weeks ago, the ‘Howgate Wonder’ burst into colour, and work began to capture the essence of the pale pink blossom.
In time, we look forward to harvesting a healthy crop of apples from the orchard opposite the glassworks.
Like many flowers the apple blossom has a rich history, high in antioxidants, producing a sweet tea that offers a clear complexion, better digestion, and stress relief. And in some cultures, the blossoms signify wisdom, joy, fertility and youthfulness.
Every year, the blossoms arrival is a sign of hope and of wonderful things to come.
Made in two sizes, this bowl is a transparent pale pink glass with a pink lip wrap.
Made to order, hand blown, hand engraved glass, signed dated and numbered.
Apple Blossom at Last
It's been a slow year in the garden and I am very pleased to say, at last our Howgate Wonder apple tree is finally in blossom. The delicate and short lived pink blooms are stunning.
I've started work on our next limited edition bowl.

Swedish Overlay
Swedish overlay is a technique created in Orrefors in the early 1900's.
It's a challenging technique which creates a fine layer of colour on the outside on the piece. We fuse two coloured bubbles together (colour on the inside of the bubble, cased in clear glass) and then turn one of them inside out.
There's one way to get it right and thousands of ways to get it very wrong. Happily, Stephen has is down and is making some beautiful forms and overlaying some beautiful colours which we plan to present later this summer.
